As with many fellow believers I have highs and lows in my walk, sometimes I feel spot on and at other times, well must do better doesn’t even cover it!
This diversity has posed a question which challenges both me and thereby my motives.
Am I a human being who is a Christian?
Or
A Christian who is a human being?
Put more plainly this means where am I coming from in my thoughts and reactions? Paul was well aware of this potential problem and gave the following warning in Colossians 2 v 8,
See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.
Its so easy to put worldly ways as expressed for example through human traditions in the driving seat- rather than being spiritually obedient first and foremost. If we are not careful this can become a prevailing attitude or even ultimately a philosophy as vividly shown by many in the Old Testament as well as the disciples with Peter being a particular example.
Fear of people, reluctance to say something because we are afraid of looking stupid or standing out from the crowd as well as lacking confidence in Christ are just some of the warning signs that we may be becoming a human who is a Christian rather than a Christian who is human.
So, the next time we are faced with a situation, good or challenging, will we make a human or spiritual led decision?
With all blessings
Tony
